Eleven days into Israel’s continuous, relentless bombing and shelling of Lebanon, Israeli authorities are poised to take their campaign to a new level – to launch a massive ground invasion into the South of Lebanon so as to finish off the job of wiping out Hezbollah’s military outposts and munitions dumps. Reportedly thousands of Israeli reservists have been called up into active duty. Small number of Israeli ground troops are already operating inside Lebanon border areas. They have taken a Lebanese village of strategic importance near the border. Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, the American administration fast-tracked a delivery of precision-guided bombs to Israel. Apparently the Bush administration is eager to take the ongoing war in the Middle East as one of its “War on terror” frontlines. The Bush tribe is determined to see Hezbollah crushed under the overwhelming might of Israeli military before they feel obliged to slow down, if not switch off, Israeli military machinery. The excessive lateral civilian casualties and sufferings make no sense with either Washington or Tel Aviv. By then the conflict will risk spiraling out of control and drawing more countries or parties into it.

What turned out to be so appalling is that Israel has showed absolutely no restraint or prudence throughout its bombing campaign. It has deliberately struck at civilian targets, such as residential apartments, trucks ferrying women and children out of targeted areas, and the like, in the calculation that more and more Lebanese people may direct their outrage at Hezbollah for the heavy human life losses and property destruction inflicted on them. Fortunately things haven’t worked out as they hoped. Once again Israelis have demonstrated to the world that they will stop at nothing while pursuing retaliation or trying to secure their security. This is a selfish, rock-hearted people that deserves no respect from others. They are good at tit-for-tat businesses. They’re always ready and happy to fight out of the law of jungle. The Holocaust in the Second World War might have molded this aspect of Israeli mentality.

Facing the imminent Israeli ground invasion, Hezbollah should save their not yet fired rockets for the Israeli infantry divisions for two reasons. One is to save their munitions. They could re-engineer the rockets into landmines and booby traps to obstruct the enemy forces’ advance every step of their way. The other is when there is no more rocket landing on Israel’s soil, while bombs and shells continue falling in Lebanon territory, the international community will exert more pressure on Israel to hold their fire. Israel is certain to have the last laugh in this fist-fighting, but would probably through broken teeth and a bleeding nose. Surrounded by even more embittered, infuriated neighbors, Israel will drift further away from the peace or security it dreams for.
